The Literary Appreciation of Russian Writers

The Literary Appreciation of Russian Writers

$37.57

Originally published in 1981, this textbook was intended for university and college students, as well as advanced groups in schools, who were being introduced to Russian literature. It was the first book of its kind, and its purpose was twofold: to give those with a modicum of Russian an indication of the range and skill of Russian writers over the last 150 years; and to provide students with a wide selection of texts for explication, a technique neglected in the study of Russian literature. As part of the authors broader approach to the promotion of Russian literature for those whose grasp of the language may be limited, he provides rather literal translations of the texts in the first part, which are not intended to be models. Political Parties in the Russian Regions

Political Parties in the Russian Regions

$294.74

Since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russias party system has suffered a difficult and turbulent infancy. Moscow based parties have had only very limited territorial penetration, and fragmentation has been one of its most significant features.Based on extensive fieldwork in three Russian regions, this book examines the development of the countrys party system and the role played by parties in regional politics. Using a comparative approach, it scrutinises the internal structures and activities of the parties, looks at their decisionmaking processes, their everyday party life, the activities of party members, and the role of regional party organisations in federal and local election campaigns. Russian Views of Japan, 17921913

Russian Views of Japan, 17921913

$71.6

Before Japan was opened up in the 1850s, contact with Russia as well as other western maritime nations was extremely limited. Yet from the early eighteenth century onwards, as a result of their expanding commercial interests in East Asia and the North Pacific, Russians had begun to encounter Japanese and were increasingly eager to establish diplomatic and trading relations with Japan. This book presents rare narratives written by Russians, including official envoys, scholars and, later, tourists, who visited Japan between 1792 and 1913. The introduction and notes set these narratives in the context of the history of RussoJapanese relations and the genre of European travel writing, showing how the Russian writers combined ethnographic interests with the assertion of Russian and European values, simultaneously inscribing power relations and negotiating cultural difference. Cossacks and the Russian Empire 15981725

Cossacks and the Russian Empire 15981725

$71.6

Using a wide range sources, this book explores the ways in which the Russians governed their empire in Siberia from 1598 to 1725. Paying particular attention to the role of the Siberian Cossaks, the author takes a thorough assessment of how the institutions of imperial government functioned in seventeenth century Russia. It raises important questions concerning the nature of the Russian autocracy in the early modern period, investigating the neglected relations of a vital part of the Empire with the metropolitan centre, and examines how the Russian authorities were able to control such a vast and distant frontier given the limited means at its disposal. It argues that despite this great physical distance, the representations of the Tsars rule in the symbols, texts and gestures that permeated Siberian institutions were close at hand, thus allowing the promotion of political stability and favourable terms of trade. Investigating the role of the Siberian Cossacks, the book explains how the institutions of empire facilitated their position as traders via the sharing of cultural practices, attitudes and expectations of behaviour across large distances among the members of organisations or personal networks. The PostSoviet Russian Media

The PostSoviet Russian Media

$71.6

This book explores developments in the Russian mass media since the collapse of the USSR in 1991. Complementing and building upon its companion volume, Television and Culture in Putins Russia: Remote Control, it traces the tensions resulting from the effective return to statecontrol under Putin of a mass media privatised and accorded its first, limited, taste of independence in the Yeltsin period. It surveys the key developments in Russian media since 1991, including the printed press, television and new media, and investigates the contradictions of the postSoviet media market that have affected the development of the media sector in recent years. It analyses the impact of the Putin presidency, including the ways in which the media have constructed Putins image in order to consolidate his power and their role in securing his election victories in 2000 and 2004. It goes on to consider the status and function of journalism in postSoviet Russia, discussing the conflict between market needs and those of censorship, the gulf that has arisen separating journalists from their audiences. The relationship between television and politics is examined, and also the role of television as entertainment, as well as its role in nation building and the projection of a national identity. Finally, it appraises the increasingly important role of new media and the internet. Overall, this book is a detailed investigation of the development of mass media in Russia since the end of Communism and the collapse of the Soviet Union. A Fateful Harvest - part 7 - Addiction

Is the Mini Phone the Next Big Thing? - Luxcellphone

For all those who love to play pranks on their friends, try getting your hands on the Imobile phones that look like they have been created by the famous fashion house, Louis Vuitton Mini Phone. These knockoff phones are from some place in Asia and sport two of Motorola's signature phone styles but with Vuitton's signature prints. Quite a unique collaboration we must say. Even though they are complete knock off's it gives us an idea of how Louis Vuitton phone would look like if the company ever thought of creating phones.

An Israeli startup has convinced mobile carriers in three countries to try a new concept: a tiny mobile phone that pops into interchangeable "jackets" to become a bigger, smarter phone - or into other gadgets to connect them to the internet.

The company, Modu, announced on Thursday that it will launch the phone, also called Modu, on October 1 with Telecom Italia SpA in Italy, OAA Vimpel Communications in Russia and Cellcom Israel Ltd.

Telecom Italia Mobile and Cellcom are the largest carriers in their respective countries, while VimpelCom is the second-largest in Russia.

The Modu is slightly smaller than the current iPod Nano and weighs 43 grams. It has a small colour screen and a limited keypad, which allows it to work as a rudimentary mobile phone on its own.

The jackets that will come with the Modu look like mobile phones, with standard numeric keypads and other features like cameras. But they lack they lack the antenna and chips that communicate with a wireless network, and this is where the Modu comes in - it pops into a slot, turning the jacket into a fully functional phone.

Modu founder Dov Moran said in an interview that the Italian carrier is excited about the concept because it can make mobile phones more like fashion, tempting consumer to update their looks every few months.

"This allows you to make a summer collection and a winter collection," Moran said.

"The carriers really are interested in having more and more customers coming through their stores, rather than signing up and coming every two years to sign a new contract and get a new phone," said Daniel Amir, a chip analyst at Lazard Capital Markets in San Francisco. He called the Modu a potential "game changer" in the mobile phone industry.

The jacket is cheap to make, has almost no electronics, and doesn't need to be tested by the carrier to see that it conforms to its network standards.

Moran estimates that carriers will be able to sell a Modu and two jackets as a bundle for about $US280, a price that they can then subsidize down to free or almost free with a two-year contract.

The jackets that will be available at launch in the other countries reflect the differences between them. The Russian carrier wants an emphasis on kids, who are the big growth market for mobile phones there, so Modu is making jackets with cartoon themes for them.

The Israeli carrier wanted a mobile phone for soldiers, so Modu is making a rugged, green jacket with a built-in flashlight.

Other jackets could focus on music, coming with pre-loaded tunes, or have full keyboards for texting. Universal Music Group said it is looking at making jackets that center on its artists.

Modu hasn't had the time to talk to U.S. carriers, Moran said. He expects them to be able to launch the phone in 2009 at the earliest.

A shortcoming of the initial model is that it will use General Packet Radio Service, or GPRS, for data transfer. It's a widely deployed but slow technology, roughly equivalent to dial-up in speed.

That will limit the Modu's usefulness, but Moran said the company is working on upgrading it to use High-Speed Download Packet Access, a "third-generation" technology used by AT&T, among others. An upgraded Modu would work with jackets and mates designed for the first-generation unit, Dov said.

Modu is also talking to consumer electronics companies like Magellan Navigation, a California-based maker of Global Positioning System devices, and car-stereo maker Blaupunkt, a unit of Robert Bosch of Germany.

The idea is to have consumer electronics companies build slots for the Modu into their devices to give them network connectivity. That could allow a GPS device to receive updates on traffic or map changes. A picture frame with a Modu slot and loud speakers could act as a music-playing, picture-showing charging station.

Other mobile phone makers have been sniffing at the modular concept. Sony Ericsson luxury phones have filed for a patent on a modular phone. But Modu appears to be furthest along in its plan, and has crucial support from large carriers.

Among consumer electronics companies, the quest to get connected to cellular networks has mainly centered on building wireless technologies into the gadgets, usually in the form of Bluetooth radios that connect to mobile phones.

In a competing approach, some manufacturers are building full cellular modems into their devices. Amazon.com's Kindle e-book reader contains a cellular broadband modem, for instance, and France's Parrot has built a mobile phone into a photo frame so it can receive picture messages.

mobile phone manufacturers, on the other hand, have been encroaching on the consumer electronics space by building more and more features into their phones, like cameras and GPS locators.

Moran, the founder of Modu, also founded M-Systems, which pioneered USB flash drives. The company was acquired by California-based SanDisk in 2006 for $US1.6 billion.
