what type of rug pad to use under stair runner?

The rug I am using for the stair runner is persian-like and "plush" (so cut pile). I recently had other wall to wall carpeting installed and was going to use the left-over carpet pad, but it just looks too thick! I am afraid it will give a "bubble" look. Is there a protocol?

If you get an istaller then have them bring samples - dont spend lots of money on the pad - it is simply not that important (just find something that will give you the level of thickness you desire and dont let them talk you into something expensive).
