How much fabric for table runners?

I am attempting to make table runners for my wedding reception using silk fabric and witch stitchery. The tables are 66" round tables. I'm trying to figure out how many yards of fabric to buy per table (there are 20 tables). I'd like the runners to each be around 13" wide and I'd like them to hang a little off the sides of the table and come to a point. I need help figuring this out! Thanks.

First, figure out your pattern... cut up some newspaper, put it over a 66" table, and see if you like the look. Adjust it.

Next, add seam allowance to the pattern.

Now measure the pattern and figure out how many you can get across the width of the fabric. Let's say the final pattern turns out to be (with seam allowances) 15" x 75".

From 42" wide fabric (measuring from selvage to selvage but not including the selvages), you can cut 2 of the runners across the width, with 12" left over.

From 54" wide fabric, you can cut three across the width, with 9" left over.

If you need 100 of these, you'll need 50 lengths of 42: wide fabric, 75" long, so 50x75" = 104 yards of fabric for the front. (you'll need a similar amount for the back).

You'd need 34 (100/3) lengths of the 54" wide fabric... 47 1/4 yards.

That yardage estimate is a little generous in both cases, because I took the easy way out for figuring and cutting. You can actually reduce the yardage a bit by nesting the cuts, How much depends on the size of the pointed ends.

Cutting plan 1: (waste fabric is all along one edge, and also between the points) This is easy to cut
because you can cut strips the width of your pattern the whole length of the fabric, then cut the points.

I'm assuming you want the runners to be lined, so there's clean finished fabric on both sides. So you'll need to cut twice as many as the number of runners you need. The silk will go on top and a less expensive fabric on the bottom.

Best thing to do is to make your paper pattern, then cut a number of copies of it. Borrow a long hallway and put down some sort of marker to show the width of the fabric with the selvages removed. Then start laying down copies of the paper pattern so you can see what you're doing on layout.
Measure a couple repeats of the layout and then figure out the total yardage you need. Add at least 2 full lengths for mistakes in cutting and sewing.

If you know someone who sews well, ask him/her to help you with it. Or take your paper patterns to the fabric store during a time that's usually a not-busy time for the store and ask them to help you figure your yardage.

There are ways to reduce the fabric waste... a seam across the middle of the runner, or a seam along the middle of some runners may allow for tighter layouts and less fabric.

The bad news is that depending on how light the silk is, the silk may require interfacing to look good. So you may actually be cutting three pieces for each runner... silk, interfacing and backing.

Make yourself a finished sample, start to finish, of your runner and see if it comes out the way you want before you commit to the project completely.
