This might sound really crazy but blue is the complementary color so try to throw some blue into the room or else it will begin to look like a cave.

Trust me, over-matching is bad. Definitely don't go with brown or dark carpets.

A nice light forest/natural green would look really good as well. It would give the natural glow to the room. =] Green is the complementary color to red, which can be found in brown and rust i suppose.
