How to get rid of the smell of a natural sheepskin rug?

How to get rid of the smell of a natural sheepskin rug? It is a natural, untreated sheep skin. Very fluffy and quite big & heavy. I phoned a specialist Dry Cleaners but they told me dry cleaning would not help to get rid of the smell. Any ideas anyone? I heard some people wash them on wool cycle in a washing machine, but as this is an untreated rug would it not shrink? Many thanks!
