Ballpark estimate for imported rugs?

On Craigslist, someone is selling rugs from Iran (with certificates of authenticity). The person's parents recently left the rug business and he has many rugs available.

Does anyone know a fair price for these rugs or have a price guide? I realize that smaller rugs are obviously less than bigger rugs, but what, for example, should a 4' x 8' rug cost?

Thanks for any help.

The price should be around $40/square foot for a standard hand-knotted wool rug.

If you're looking at a kilim (looks like a very thick tapestry) those will be much cheaper, and if you're looking at a silk rug, or silk blend rug, those will be about double the cost of wool, or maybe more.

Over the last few decades, Iranian architects have made a significant contribution to architectural design. This has, however, remained largely unrecognised internationally, as architects in Iran have had little exposure in publications abroad and the diaspora of well-known Iranian designers working in the West, such as Hariri & Hariri and Nader Tehrani of NADAA, are not necessarily associated with their cultural background. Moreover Iran, or rather Persia, has one of the richest and longest architectural heritages, which has a great deal of untapped potential for contemporary design. The intention of this issue is both to introduce key works and key architects from a range of generations ? at home and abroad ? and to highlight the potential of historical structures for contemporary architecture. Features Hariri & Hariri, Nader Tehrani of NADAA and Studio Integrate.Places the spotlight on emerging practices in Iran: Arsh Design Studio, Farjadi Architects, Fluid Motion Architects, Pouya Khazaeli.and Kourosh Rafiey (Asar).Contributors include: Farrokh Derakhshani, Darab Diba, Dr Nasrine Faghih, Michael Hensel and Jeffrey Kipnis.Looks at garden and landscape design as well as the urban fabric in Iran from a historical and contemporary context.? Includes articles on the work of post-revolutionary architecture.

The current flag of Iran was adopted on July 29, 1980, and is a reflection of the changes brought about by the Iranian Revolution. The emblem in the center of the flag is a highly stylized composite of various elements representing different facets of Islamic life: Allah, the Book, the Sword, the five principles of Islam, balance, unity, neutrality, and the universal government of the downtrodden. The coat of arms of Iran has been placed in the center of the white band which is meant to have multiple meanings, but is essentially a geometricallysymmetric form of the word Allah as well as overlapping parts of the Islamic phrase la ilaha illa Allah, forming a monogram. The symbol consists of four crescents and a sword. The four crescents form the word Allah: from right to left the first crescent is the letter Aleph, the second one is the letter Laam, the sword is the second Laam, and the third and forth crescents together form the letter Heh. Above the sword is a tashdid Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 124 Publication Date: 2010/07/27 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.29 inches

Although frequently vilified, Iran is a nation of great intellectual variety and depth, and one of the oldest continuing civilizations in the world. Its political impact has been tremendous, not only on its neighbors in the Middle East but also throughout the world. From the time of the prophet Zoroaster, to the powerful ancient Persian Empires, to the revolution of 1979, the hostage crisis, and the current standoff over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Michael Axworthy vividly narrates the nation’s rich history. He explains clearly and carefully both the complex succession of dynasties that ruled ancient Iran and the surprising ethnic diversity of the modern country, held together by a common culture. With Iran again the focus of the world’s attention, A History of Iran is an essential guide to understanding this volatile nation.

Democracy is like a Rug

The Origins of the Area Rug

The oldest rug in existence was unearthed in Siberia in 1949 by a Russian archeologist. Referred to as the Pazyryk rug, this pile knotted carpet was discovered in a burial mound preserved in ice. Radiocarbon testing dates the rug around 5th century BC and it shares some similarities with later oriental rugs. These traits include a central field with rows of squares with a floral pattern in each. These squares are contained within a border of octagons resembling later Turkoman weavings. It is believed this rug is not likely a nomadic product, but rather the product of an Achaemenid carpet production center. Also, the advanced weaving technique used in the Pazyryk rug indicates a long history of evolution and expertise in the art of carpet making.

Skip ahead a few hundred years and we see the art of pile rug weaving appearing in Europe some time after 1000 AD, most likely in Spain at first, due to its proximity to Egypt, Mesopotamia and Iran. Though rug weaving spread gradually through all of Europe, the level of importance and cultural significance never reached the level it had and still has today in Asian countries.

Prior to the discovery of the Pazyryk rug, the oldest fragments were discovered in the Tarim Basin of Eastern Turkmenistan, west of China and Mongolia. While many rug experts and historians believe pile rug weaving originated in Mongolia and spread westward to Persia and Anatolia, others believe the Persians were well versed in the art long before the Mongolians. Since rugs are perishable, and could not last for thousands of years unless preserved in ice like the Pazyryk carpet, we may never know where pile rug weaving started. What’s not debatable, however, is that wherever rug weaving started, it was the Persians that made an art form out of it.

While mechanized rug manufacturing has become the norm in most industrialized nations, hand-woven rugs and carpets are still produced with painstaking care in the countries where rug weaving originated and was perfected. While usually more costly, these area rugs from artisans in Iran and China, and everywhere in between, are made to last for generations and if cared for properly, can even appreciate in value over time.
