Questions about braiding a denim rug?

For those of you who have braided a rug using denim jeans, how many pairs of jeans does it take? How large was the rug you made? I have found instructions, but none say how many pairs of pants (even aproximately) that you'll need. I'd like to make a rectangular one, if that matters.

It really depends on the size of jeans and how much fabric is salvageable. Another factor would be how tight or loose you braid the fabric and how you sew it together.

If you don't have enough jeans, go to a thrift store search for extra large sizes so that you can maximize the fabric.

If you are trying to make the braided rug with your own personal jeans, you can make it a work in progress and keep adding jeans to it when they become available...which in my case, with a 12 year son, isn't very long at all. ;o)
