My cats have fleas... because my stupid bf has a dog and even though I told him he needs to get the dog flea medicine he didn't listen. As a result, now the dog and the cats have fleas. Plus, the cats have tapeworms because of the fleas. Needless to say I want to kill my bf since my cats never had any bugs and he didn't listen to me.
He went to the vet and he got flea meds and tapeworm meds. BUT -
Here's my question. ARE THERE ANY FLEAS IN THE CARPET, THE RUG, THE CLOSET, THE SOFA ETC? HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I GET RID OF THOSE WITHOUT HURTING THE POOR ANIMALS WHO HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS?
Please help. I am pretty much desperate and I don't want to go to jail for beating the living crap out of my bf. Not that I could even if I tried.
Also - can I get fleas???.... Oh, man... this last one just dawned on me....
Yippee...something with which I have experience.
SAFEST and LEAST EXPENSIVE thing you can do:
Buy some Borax -- probably will find Twenty Mule Team Borax in the laundry department at your grocery store.
Here's what you do:
1) Vacuum your floors VERY WELL -- and DISPOSE OF THE vacuum bag IMMEDIATELY, so that you don't turn your vacuum cleaner into a nursery for whatever fleas or flea eggs that you pick up in the process.
2) Sprinkle the Borax over every bit of carpeting and using a broom to work it into the carpeting (rug). It is not harmful to you or the pets!
3) If your sofa and/or chairs have removable cushions, remove them and sprinkle the Borax into the areas below the cushion and put the cushions back on. Also, after you've treated the traffic areas, move whatever furniture is movable...sofa, chair, etc.,...and sprinkle the Borax under those. Again, use the broom to work it into the carpet. If you can't move certain pieces but there's a space beneath them...for instance, a hide-a-bed sofa is VERY heavy, get a hair dryer, turn it on low and blow the Borax under that piece of furniture.
4) If your animals will let you comb them with a flea comb, then here's another thing you can do. Get a bowl of water and power some dishwashing liquid into it. Swish it around in the water...BUT NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE BUBBLES. What this does is breaks the water's natural surface tension. Dip the flea comb in the water, comb the animal and drag any fleas off the comb and put them in the water. Because the soap has eliminated surface tension issues, these flat little fleas can't float...so they can't escape by floating over to the side of the bowl!!! As for the dog, if he will lay down and roll over AND be still, you can catch fleas on his tummy. Again, drop them into the soap-treated water, so they will sink!!!
As for YOU or your BF getting fleas, you can't really GET them, BUT, they can get into your bedding, or with a bad enough infestation...they will dine on you. One night I was lying in bed...couldn't go to sleep...mind going everywhere. Finally, I realized that I kept scratching one leg with the toes of the other foot. I turned on the lights and saw that I had multiple bites on my leg...could have only been a flea. With that realization, I pushed the sheets back and started inspecting the top and bottom sheets very carefully...and, there it was ONE STUPID FLEA...he'd made quite the meal off of my leg -- probably 5 bites!!!
One last thing, IF YOU WANT TO you can get a manual spray (as opposed to an aerosol) like Adam's to treat the fabric of your sofa and chair. JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU TEST FOR COLORFASTNESS. Just so you know, when I had my problem due to having taken in a dog to foster -- with no indoor-outdoor pet, I'd not had a flea infestation for a while...turning all the surrounding yards into flea infested nightmares...I put fresh sheets on the bed. I sprayed the surface of the bottom sheet...THEN turned on the overhead fan to let it dry. Then, turned OFF the fan, treated the top sheet, dried it by turning on the overhead fan. Then, treated the blanket in the same manner. It really helped with the problem. You can also spray it on the pet's bedding...though they will NOT like the smell. Even though the package says that you can spray it on the animal...DON'T!!! The smell makes them nuts. My chihuahua ran around like he was on fire trying to rub it off on the carpet...so I learned my lesson.
Because of the outdoor flea problem, I comb my chihuahua every night with that soapy water nearby. I always catch 1 to 4 fleas.
One last SAFE "cure" is Diatomaceous Earth (DE)-- skeletons of teeny-tiny sea creatures. You can rub it on the animal, work it into the carpet, etc. These little skeletons are very sharp to the insects skeletons. As a result, they "nick" the exoskeletons...which, unlike skin, cannot heal itself...so the insect dries out (i.e., dies). I would ONLY EVER USE "food grade" diatomaceous earth so that it doesn't have additives that might prove harmful to you or your pets.
No matter what, best of luck to you! It can be done...just don't give up!!!
And, I guess you really shouldn't kill your bf unless you can think of a REALLY good place to hide the body...hahaha...JOKING!!!

Handmade Oriental Rugs - A Long Lasting Tradition And History
Rug making is one of the oldest crafts in the world. The oldest known carpet has been dated at the 5th century BC, but the art of carpet weaving has been traced back as far as 7000 BC. There have been numerous references to weaving and rugs in the Bible and other historical documents. Although Egypt is likely the first area in the world in which rugs were made, the art as we know it really flourished in Central Asia.
The first woven rugs that we are familiar with were probably rugs similar to the kilims, which are flat woven rugs. Following this were the rugs we know as pile rugs. They originated with the nomadic tribes of the region, people who realised the value of their sheep's wool. The rugs that were made were used to keep the home warm and also to decorate the home. The rugs were put on the floors, walls, doors, and windows. They were also used as a way to judge the worth of a wife as the women were the weavers in the tribes and their skills were highly prized.
Because rug weaving was first practiced by the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, their skills were displayed in many areas. This resulted in rug weaving skills being adopted by many different regions. Anatolia in Turkey is one of the oldest known areas of modern rug weaving. The Turkish tribes moved into the area from Central Asia, bringing with them their rug weaving skills.
The Selcuk Turks of the 13th and 14th centuries were the first known Turkish weavers and their rugs tended to have floral patterns and geometrical motifs. Next came the Ottoman Turks, which began weaving in the 14th century, and during the transition animal figures began to appear on the rugs. By the 15th century animal figures were very common on rugs and by the 16th century designs with twisting branches, leaves, and flowers such as tulips, carnations, and hyacinths were commonplace. These types of designs are still used in Turkish rugs today.
In the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries rug weaving traditions and skills began to move away from the Anatolian region of Turkey and many places took up the art of weaving, including Usak and Bergama. By the 19th and 20th centuries Hereke, which is near Istanbul, had become a prosperous rug making region. Hereke is known for producing the finest silk rugs in the world.
Rugs can be identified by region based on the materials and the designs and motifs used. For example, rugs woven by the nomads of Anatolia are woven wool on wool whereas the rugs woven in villages and towns were woven wool on cotton. These days the art of rug making in Turkey is alive and well. Many regions follow the traditions of their ancestors, except that rugs today are mostly made for export rather than strictly home use. With the popularity of Turkish rugs, the art and tradition of carpet weaving will be alive and well for many centuries to come.
