Rectangle Area Rug What is the width of the border....?
An Area rug has a central 5m by 3m rectangle in a mosaic pattern, with a plain border of uniform width around it. The total area of the rug is 24m^2. What is the width of the border?
If w = the width of the border, then the whole rug's dimensions are
(2w + 5)(2w + 3) since the border is on both sides of the pattern.
Multiply this out, make it equal to 24, simplify and make equal to zero, then factor.
