Secular logic behind religious prohibitions?

I've read things that suggested secular logic behind some religious prohibitions. But there's one I've never seen given ANY other explanation.

Pigs can't sweat. They NEED to wallow in high temperatures, or they'll die. A muddy wallow or sty uses a LOT of water. The old Jews lived in a DESERT. It was dangerous to the tribe to use that much water, and if you were rich enough to do it, the display might cause social tension. And there was trichinosis. OK, I get why pork ain't kosher.

Shellfish. Shipped in from a coast hundreds or even thousands of miles away, in an era with no motorized vehicles or refrigeration. OK, I get why shellfish ain't kosher.

Homophobic stuff. OK, they were primitive and undeveloped, and had the idea that sex was just for procreation. I get it.

But what about the "mixed fibers" thing?

What on earth (excuse the expression) could be behind a prohibition like THAT? Why would wearing a tunic made up of a wool/cotton blend be forbidden?

The mixed fibers prohibition is a sumptuary law, a classist way to control people socially and set them off from other groups of people (particularly Pagan folk who were seen as a threat).
