Origins Of Granite And Marble: Know The Basic Facts
Natural stones can be used for interior designs. They add a touch of elegance to the décor. However the mineral structure and the chemical composition can differ and it has been noted that not all stones can be used for architectural purposes. Geologists search for years for one usable stone quarry. The natural stones can be largely classified into three types. The first kind is known as sedimentary rocks which are formed with the deposition in rivers and oceans.
Igneous rock is generally born out of lava activities. The third kind which is popularly known as the metamorphic rocks is formed when pressure and high temperature change the mineral structures of igneous and sedimentary rocks. Granite is a fine example of igneous rock which is formed when lava gets cooled in the deep inside the earth’s core.
Limestone and sandstone are two good examples of sedimentary rocks. After metamorphism, they are generally converted into slate and marble. When stones are used for commercial purposes, they are classified according to the way they are cut and carved.
Certain granite and marble are good for slab fabrications, but they cannot be used for carvings. Travertine is one of the natural stones which are formed by the deposition of calcium carbonate near the springs. It is porous in nature and often fine grains can be noticed on the surface. The presence of iron and the amount of iron mainly determines the different shades of the stone. Travertine is known by different names and it is also called the travertine marbles or the travertine limestone’s. If they are used for decorative purposes, they are often called the Mexican onyx and onyx marble.
It has often been nicknamed as Egyptian Oriental albaster. Often variations in shades can be noticed within the same slab. However when one thinks of colors, the available ones are walnut, white, ivory, red, yellow, gold, tan, or beige. Most travertine marble is used for flooring. Some of them are also used as wall tiles or countertops. You will love the texture of this particular stone. Now travertine marble can be used for making mantel surrounds, gazebos, sinks, tables, columns, surrounds, fountains and statues.
Although there are various types of marbles available in the market, yet not all of them can be used for building purpose. Some calcite rich stones which has crystallized are also known as building marbles. The Guizhou cream marble which is quarried exclusively in Southern China is known popularly as the building marble. So when you are buying marbles for home, you have to know the difference. Are you buying the real marbles true to the geological definition or are you looking at the different types of natural stones? As marble is not heat-resistant it is better to avoid using it in the kitchen counters. Granite is a far better choice. No one can deny the classy look of marbles. But think carefully before you incorporate them in the interiors. It should match the designs!
