Nepal Oriental What race would people from the Indian subcontinent be considered?
I think of people from the Far East with yellow skin when I hear of Asian people. It is no longer politically correct to refer to them as "Oriental." Folks from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Nepal might get insulted if we demarcated them Arabs. They do not speak Arabic in this countries, and many of them are Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jainist, and even Christian. There are over a billion people in India while there are more than 150 million in Pakistan and Bangladesh. We love classifying everything in our society, yet there is no official name for those from the Indian subcontinent. Are they known as South Asian or something other than Middle Eastern?
classifying by "race"--many from the Indian subcontinent are Caucasian, many are not. Arabs and many from the Middle East are Caucasian as well.
Ethnicity is another, more precise way of looking at the issue.
Language complicates things even more. Many languages in India are Indo-European, many are not. Many languages in the Middle East are also Indo-European.
The "traditional" race categories are Caucasoid, Mongoloid, African (yahoo doesn't like the old traditional name) and Australoid. As people learned more about people and their characteristics, other terms and groups were added.
But the really basic piece of information is that ALL people are really part of only ONE race, the human race.
The mission and objective of the VSN Nepal Volunteer Program in Nepal is to encourage and invite International/National volunteers to contribute to community development, education development, as well as health and environmental activities of the Nepali people. Program Aim The Volunteer Society Nepal Volunteer Program aims to assist the sustainable development of under-developed Nepali communities, through projects aimed at children, youth and women. Programs are co-ordinated through rural government schools and community-based programs, with community-based programs often initiated with the help of VSN, volunteers and local community members. The Volunteer Program achieves its aim by initiating and/or assisting with sustainable community-based project development, concentrating on raising local awareness of fundamental social issues, including education, health and sanitation and conservation. The process of community development is slow in Nepal, despite the efforts of the government and rural NGOs. This fact makes the need for motivated volunteers even greater. Few villages in Nepal have basic sanitation facilities, resulting in widespread basic health problems, such as malnutrition and the spread of water-borne diseases. Thus, volunteers play a key role in increasing the ability of communities to address these issues. Volunteers participate in creating sustainable community groups, such as youth groups, student groups and women’s groups, and will work very closely with partner NGOs, who are already working in the field on specific issues, utilizing their expertise and experience.
