Seagrass flooring stinks like dirty feet!?

We have moved into an apartment where the previous tenant installed wall-to-wall seagrass flooring (including the kitchen). We have covered the majority of the surface area with rugs, but the smell of the floor is still very strong to me. I have read that seagrass has a natural 'hay' smell, but this is not what I'm smelling. The floor smells like a bin of dirty shoes or someones's stinky feet... that's really the best way to describe it.

It's driving me nuts... has anyone experienced this smell or does anyone know how to get rid of it?

It is the natural rotting process of the flooring. You can't cover it up and not let it breath or it will rot.The carpeting and rugs you have put down holds in the moisture to the flooring. It needs air circulation.
