Half Wool How do i convert a 4 ply pattern to a double knit pattern?
want to use some odd bits of double knit wool to make some dolls clothes but the pattern i really want to do is 4 ply. Is there a way to convert this? i done a tension square - 18 rows which in 4ply should come out as 2 inches. in double knit this was 2 and a half inches. hope someone can help. thanks
This could get really tricky.
The best thing to do is to try to match the gauge is to use smaller and smaller needles, until you match the gauge.
But you need to look at the gauge in terms of both length and width -- you said that 18 rows should equal 2", but was equalling 2 1/2", but you didn't say anything about how many stitches across you should be getting versus are getting.
Also -- how large of a swatch are you knitting? A 2 inch swatch is pretty small for assessing the gauge -- you should maybe do 4 or 6" to really see how your gauge is coming out.
If you can get the gauge to match, then you should be able to just follow the pattern.
If not, you may not be able to use the yarn you want to use. Think not just about how it will be to match the gauge, but also how well things like armholes, necklines, etc will work (or not) if the gauge is off.
