Foot Round 15 foot round above ground pool having issued with chlorine levels and pool store clueless! help?
Hi all,
I recently opened my 15 foot round above ground pool after the winter and was told to dump 10 liters of liquid shock into the pool and take a water sample to the pool store a few days later. I have brought the water sample in a few days later and was told that the levels are still too high and to come back again. I have went back again a few days after and still the same thing. When I use the home testing kit the pH level shows fine but the yellow die to test for chlorine levels turns orange so it appears like it is off of the chart! I am new to this pool stuff as we bought the house that has the pool but the pool store keeps on telling me to wait a few days and come on back. What am I doing wrong as I have been told by others that the pool store is clueless. What do I do to fix this?
Pool Supply Houses exist to sell chemicals!
10 liters is almost 3 gallons of liquid. Have not heard of liquid shock but it could have been chlorine, sodium hypochlorite being typical. Your pool is 3965 gallons assuming 3' tall and to the brim. SHC 12.5% to 1ppm is 4.42oz. Sounds like they dosed your pool to 28.5ppm which is gross!
Refer to first statement. If your residual water had any cyanuric acid in it or if you filled it with new water when opening and did not add any conditioner, sanitizer or cyanuric acid are all the same thing. 30ppm is recommended to protect about 3-5ppm of chlorine.
What to do? Wait Ultra Violet rays in the sun will burn off the excess but could take a while. In the meantime get a good testkit. I would recommend one used by pool maintenance people it tests for chlorine, free, combined and total, pH with up and down, Total Alkalinity, Calcium hardness and Cyanuric Acid. Check taylortechnologies.com their kit has a great book for mainaing pools and interpreting results.
I read your question again. I think the liquid shock may have been dichlor, its pH is 6.7 the most neutral of chlorines but 1/2 of the volume is stabilizer so you could be waiting a while. Have the pool supply test for CYA levels if you are above 100 you are in for a goofy water chemistry season.

How much sand do I need under a 16 foot round pool?
I have a 16 foot round pool and would like to install it we have a pretty level yard how much sand should I use?
The formula is PI times Radius (squared) times height.
This will give you the square footage of sand you need.
So it will be 8' x 8' x 3.14 x thickness of sand.
If you use a 6" thick base of sand it will be 64 x 3.14 x .5 = 100.48 square feet. A cubic yard of sand = 27 square feet.
Divide 100.48 by 27 = 3.72 cubic yards of sand.
You can change the thickness of the sand as you see fit and figure it for your self. Just make sure all your inputs are in feet.
