Do you think $8000 is enough to decorate a family room with a decorator?

I want to hire a decorator to help me furnish/decorate my family room. I have already purchased the love seat and sofa, but I have nothing else.

My impression of decorators has always been that they decorate rooms with a budget more like $50,000.

I'm not looking for custom furnishings, etc. I just want it to be average stuff but with the help of a decorator's eye. Is that even possible? Is it reasonable to hope to get the rest of the room decorated (coffee table, lamps, rug, accessories, wall hangings, window treatment, paint) with $8000?

yes, its more than enough, if you have a designer who is both creative, and knowledgeable about where to shop.
But, ultimately, it depends on your tastes;you could spend 8000 dollars on a single antique piece, or you could furnish and decorate an entire house for less than that. Its all a matter of what you think you need. A good designer should be flexible enough to work within your budget, and if,after listening to what you want, they think they cant do it, they'll tell you so.
As for having a budget of 50,000 dollars to do one room.....well, youre talking about maybe 2 % of the general population....there would be very few designers in business if they only wanted to cater to clients with that kind of wealth.

1)tell them what your budget range is.
2)tell them about your tastes
3)tell them what the space will be primarily used for.
4)tell them about the lifestyle of your family.
5) if possible, provide them with paint chips,fabric samples,pictures of other spaces you like as inspiration, etc.
this is in order that they can get a handle on just what youre after.
6) be flexible and open to listening to their ideas, even if you dont initially agree, try to picture the end result of their vision.
7) if you totally think you cant work with their design ideas, then just tell them youre going to continue with different consultations, a good designer will not be offended by this.
And if the designer feels he or she cannot accomplish the task within your budget, then they will say so.
