Creme Rug Size

What color(s) should I paint and decorate my sewing loft?

My husband and I are installing white cabinets with concrete-looking counter tops. We're putting a beautiful room-sized black rug on the floor (featuring some small swirls of creme and white).

What I cannot figure out is what color to paint the walls and what color chairs / couch to put in the room. We had originally wanted to paint the room gray, but I feared it wouldn't work near the beige-colored walls of the rest of the house.

Any advice / suggestions welcomed. Thanks

I should have specified the space - it's a 12x10 foot room. Open to most of the house. I hope this helps. Think of the standard "bedroom" size, only without a fourth wall and a closet.

I looked over your color scheme, and I assume this is a medium to small room. Based on all that, I suggest you paint the walls white.
I know it sounds stark with the cabinets and all but your choice of carpet is so high contrast that you must do this to preserve the balance of the room and keep it light. This will give it an art gallery feel, then get a clean red sofa, and a chrome and white leather workchair. See design within reach website for examples. Keep it simple cause youre going to work in this room. Light it with chrome fixtures all over the place, look for cable or ovoid track lights for the ceiling.
