Color Carpet Binding

turning carpeting into an area rug?

I'm looking for a solid color area rug for my living room (I have older, dull hardwood floors and I live in a rental) but the ones I find are all kinda crappy. If I buy decent carpeting off one of the rolls at home depot or lowe's is there a way I can make it into an area rug without it getting ratty on the edges, and without folding it over? Is there a way to bind the edges?

buy from a real carpet place. they will bind the edges with the same color carpet or an accent color. i used to do that when i was in high school
