I need ideas for painting a living room / dining room area?

I am painting every room in the house right now, Freshening things up. I have furniture thats a colonial blue, and beige carpeting, My kitchen set is ivory. The walls are white right now,. because I couldn't think of what to do with them last time, I am stuck again. I am not very adventurous with color, and i will be changing my furniture within the next three years but not the carpet. I dont want to do white again on the wall. Other than an off white or cream,. does anyone have any suggestions? Because its such large expansive room that includes the dining area,. I cant go too crazy. I'm bored with white,. and not sure I want off white either. if if it wil make any difference. Any suggestions are welcome.
I am totally loving all the encouragement I'm getting to go with color, but I have two questions. One, what color do you paint the ceiling? and Two,. wont a darker shade make any room look smaller? I'm really appreciate all the positive feedback, and great answers.

It takes bravery but if you dare to be adventurous with color, I'll bet you won't go back to white.

Tan, a lighter shade of blue, buttery yellow, pale green, maybe even a soft coral will set your furniture off and make your dining area a great place to enjoy a meal and conversation.

I like to go to the paint store and bring color swatches home and view them during different times of day. I do this for 3 or 4 days so I can see how the light affects it and how it makes me feel. The right color always emerges.
