How do I get tight curls(banana curls)?

I wanna know what is the best thing for me to use in my hair,curling irons or rollers to get tight curls? I have medium long hair that comes to my shoulders,my hair is thick.The texture is soft,and it's like brown but looks burgundy in light.Any suggestions?
