This is actually very simple really:

You are looking for the width x, and you know the dimensions of the carpet as well as the area of the room:

Length x Width = Area

=> 9 x (7+x) = 167

solve for the x:

x = (167/9) - 7 = 11.555555555555555555556

Rounding answer to the nearest 10th of a foot:

x = 11.6 feet
