High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A yurt is a portable, feltcovered, wood latticeframed dwelling structure traditionally used by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia. A yurt is more homelike than a tent in shape and build, with thicker walls. They are popular amongst nomads. Traditional yurts consist of a circular wooden frame carrying a felt cover. The felt is made from the wool of the flocks of sheep that accompany the pastoralists. The timber to make the external structure is not to be found on the treeless steppes, and must be obtained by trade in the valleys below. The frame consists of one or more lattice wallsections, a doorframe, roof poles and a crown. Some styles of yurt have one or more columns to support the crown. The (selfsupporting) wood frame is covered with pieces of felt. Depending on availability, the felt is additionally covered with canvas and/or suncovers. Living Large In A Round Home

When you think about the type of home you would like to live in, a yurt is most likely not the first thing that comes to mind.  This is understandable; because the word yurt is not something most people have ever even heart, let alone understood.  In essence, it is a roundhome designed for energy efficiency and spaciousness.   But let's back up just a moment.

A yurt is a round dwelling that has been around for centuries.  The first yurts were used by nomads and were made to be portable.  These original houses were easy to put up and take down.  They also took into account the sacredness of the earth and exhibited their inhabitants' love of nature.  What a wonderful concept, even for today's society!

The original design of a yurt is that it was held together at the eaves by a tension band.  The roof is cone shaped, even in the modern yurt.  Typically there is a skylight in the center of the roof, which is a much loved feature.  The roundhome is the modern day yurt, and it features a multi-faceted panel frame instead of fabric or lattice.  It is typically a prefab home and can be found in just about any size one can imagine.

What is so unique about the roundhome is that the design allows for a totally spacious living area.  In this sort of housing structure, the rafters are laid side by side and attached to the tension cable along the perimeter of the house.  At the point where they meet in the conical roof, the rafters are cut short and joined at the skylight.  This structural system has the capability to span large distances without support beams or a center pole.

While having a wide open living space is a great thing all on its own, the added benefit of this type of building is the efficiency in which materials are used.  Because of the design, the roundhome is considered to be green housing.  Green housing is an enormous necessity today because our homes take up the majority of available energy.  Within the home, it is the heating and cooling systems that account for upwards of sixty percent of the energy consumed.  Because a roundhome is built to utilize natural resources through the use of the skylight and ample windows, the heating and cooling needs are completely different than that of a traditionally designed home.

The home you live in is a huge part of the lifestyle you live. If you are joining the ranks of people who are growing tired of the bustling busy life, you may find the roundhome set up in a rural area to be a perfect home choice.  By living in a home that takes full advantage of the views of your property, you enjoy the same sort of feel as the ancient nomads did with their sacred yurts.  This sort of home allows you to regain your connection with nature and also allows you to move towards green living through its energy efficient construction.
