   When I bought my house the first thing I did, before one stick of furniture was brought in, was to re-finish the floors. (I hired a company that does hardwoord floors.) I asked the same thing. He said there was no way to fix the darkened areas without replacing the boards. He said even if I put dark stain on the floors (but I love the natural oak wood color) the darker areas would still be visible.
   Now that it's been 6 years, I haardly see the darkened areas. You can minimize the contrast by using throw rugs, which you will want to do anyway to keep the dirt mostly in the throw rugs and off the floors.
   Orange Glo manufactures products that are great on wood floors. I use a Mop and Shine-like product for wood floors made by them. I buy it at Walmart. It cleans and shines at the same time. Just be sure it's for wood floors. I also use a product that smells just like the liquid wax my mom used on her kitchen floors, also made by Orange Glo. It makes the floors shine real nice.
   Start with a good cleaning. Let a tea bag sit in a gallon of warm water for an hour, remove it and add 1/2 cup cider vinegar and just a small bit of dish detergent. Ring out the mop to the point it is barely wet. Mop the floors well, and then use the Orange Glo mop and shine product. You will be amazed at the difference just these steps will make.
   Don't try to do this all at once. Use a Swiffer to dust and clean the floors every other day, then mop, and another day use the other products I mentioned. The floors are a lot of work but I love my hardwood floors and will never have carpet in my house again.
