The Best Rug Pad for Antique Rugs
Antique rugs are an investment and deserve the best protection. It is important to provide this protection with a quality rug pad.
Because they have gone through years of use, exposure to the elements and several cleanings, antique rugs are usually more delicate than new rugs, particulary in their foundation. The pressure from walking on an antique rug is relieved with the proper rug pad underneath.
The best rug pad for antique rugs is a dense pad, nothing spongy or very thick. My choice is a 1/4 inch thick needle punched recyled jute and natural rubber rug pad. A quality pad of this type has a textured surface in order to keep the rug from crawling and a solid, natural rubber back to keep the rug in place.
The effects of a quality rug pad on antique rugs are enormous. The rug pad will take much of the stress associated with walking on the rug, hence prolonging the life of the rug and keeping it intact. The rug pad also makes vacuuming easier. It creates more of an airflow for the vacuum in order to remove as much dust as possible whenever you vacuum. Keeping your antique rug from slipping also greatly reduces wear and a quality non slip rubber pad is best for this.
The 1/4 inch jute/rubber rug pad is by far the best for antique rugs. The surface and bottom of the pad work together in providing as best of a protection as possible for antique rugs. Of course normal care is necessary as well such as a regular professional hand cleaning and normal rotation.
