How Karastan Rugs are Made

Brief History of Excellence

 

If you were able to purchase a Karastan rug with a discount, it’s a stylish steal. This rug is being considered a breakthrough by several fashion magazines that call this as the “mystery rug.” Ever wondered how this handmade rug started? Here’s how.

 

Karastan began its business on rugs early in 1928. Its debut roll off in Leakesville in North Carolina showcased Axminster loom, and so buyers began to notice the minimal difference of a handmade rug with a rug made by a machine. Marshall Field, the brainchild of these rugs, was fast to take advantage of Karastan’s popularity. After five years, they were able to display a Karastan oriental rug as an actual covering of the floor during the World’s Fair on 1933 in Chicago. After about 5 million feet had crushed and dirtied the stylish rug, Mr. Field used half of the rug as a sample by having it cleaned, and the other half a lifetime resemblance of its durability. That piece still exists to testify durability and elegance of Karastan’s splendid creations.  

 

Making Karastan rugs

 

The best feature is the single interlocked unit, making it exceptionally durable with a power-driven production process of weaving.  This is why Karastan rugs look like they’re handmade. They resemble the same look and feel of hand-knotted rugs.

 

Three Different Carpet Finish Processes

 

Aside from the production process, innovating finish processes has always been the secret of Karastan in making rugs. No wonder they were able to produce several finish processes which were patented. These area rugs, with unique colors, really show their mastery in this field of business. Competitors have exerted efforts to imitate these processes and produce similar appearances, but to no avail.

 

• Antique Wash finish. Uses chemicals in toning down brightness. There is not a single rug that can compare the kind of delicacy, softness, and harmony of hues like the Karastan rug with this type of finish. The final appearance is so aged that it looks like an actual ancient rugs.  
• Lustre Wash finish. A soft finish comparable to that of antique wash finish.
• Tea Wash finish. With multi-step method, an added aged appearance produces a classic patina to a wool using chemicals. Adds a bright yellowish color when applied in clean white wools.

 

Diversity in Oriental Rugs

 

Over the years, Karastan has surpassed the first loom, from Axminster to a more sophisticated and efficient one. It has improved a lot, from the use of materials, techniques, and even patterns. To this day, there is a variety of collections of Karastan’s oriental rugs available in a wide array of designs, rich colors, and a touch of elegant contrast and patterns. Where Do Colors of Oriental Rug Originate?

 

Most of the rugs that you buy are made up of colors produced from a combination of various chemical dyes. However, the shades of handmade oriental rugs come from the extracts of plants and vegetables that grow in areas where weavers live. These are called natural dyes. They’re not mixed to any of the chemicals to achieve the desired color finish. Weavers who use natural dyes do great after having produced vibrant colors to give your carpet an elegant look. The elegance of your rug goes far beyond the weavers’ skills; it’s their dedication to properly mix colors to create a work of art.
