Antique High Quality
UK - Regarding Importing Japanese Samurai Swords (10 PTS!!!)?
I know that in April 2008 a law was passed which banned the import of Japanese samurai swords, but I heard there were a few exceptions:
1. Religious reasons
2. Theatrical, museum, re-enactment and traditional dance purposes
3. "hand forged" or "traditionally made" swords
4. antique swords made before the 2nd world war
The sword I want to buy from eBay is HAND FORGED and made out of high-quality carbon steel. Does this give me an exception, and the USA-based seller can ship me the item without problems?
I was thinking of calling Customs and having a long talk with them about exemptions to this rule just to make sure there wouldn't be any problems, but I'd rather not go through that whole process and hopefully someone here can answer my question.

The rule applies to hand forged swords because its considered more of a piece of art than a weapon.
However your katana is made of carbon steel. That might take re-introuce the 'dangerous' part.
Even though the rule says you should be allowed to, i would suggest you still talk to customs and just confirm it. You wouldn't want to spend so much on a hand made katana (plus shipping costs) and then have it confiscated.

Did you see what years he was practicing art? Is it in fact EDO?
I cannot figure out the last letter but the first four are 大森英重. It sounds like a name 大森 (Oomori) being the family name and 英重 (Hideshige) being the given name. In Japanese, the family name always comes first.
His name shows up on the antique shop websites and sounds like he's the artist. I tried to find more info on him but haven't gotten much.
