The historical region of the Gaziantep province at first glance appears to be a large industrial and modern city, but its history dates back 4,000 years. Its original name was Ayintap and during times such as; Hittite, Roman and Babylonian, it was a significant settlement.
The city is situated at the crossroads between many other areas and as a result of its location, Gaziantep has had many influences. The old city centre is known for its stone houses complete with traditional features. In the city centre there is a 6th – century Gaziantep Fortress and Ravanda citadel with watchtowers, there is also the Mehmet Gazali Tomb and a bath house. As well as this list of stunning buildings to visit, the city also has its Archaeological Museum which contains artefacts from the area’s many different and influential periods, including some relics from Roman times. This is one of the finest museums of its kind in Turkey. If you are visiting the monolithic sculptural remains in Mount Nemrut, Gaziantep is a good stopping-off point for a day trip.
